This charismatic, little bowl was hand thrown on the wheel using a very groggy, red clay. Once leather hard, it was decorated with an iron oxide slip and soon after coated with a thick white slip. As a result, the fired designs have been partially obscured under the slip coating, creating a subtle, misty effect. On the outside, a transparent glaze was applied, which has turned slightly more matte where it has been exposed to fly ash in the kiln. Where the slip is very thin on the inside of the rim, there is a beautiful iridescence which shines gold when held an angle to the light. The interior has been glazed with a Japanese style shino, again over a spiral decoration painted using iron oxide slip. The foot ring has been hand carved using a custom-made tool. Carries Mark Smalley's person symbol impressed to the underside.
The piece measures approx. 3.25 inches tall and just over 3.25 inches in diameter at its widest point. The bowl is a nice size for a small portion of green tea but would be equally enjoyable to use with any other beverage such as wine or beer.
