This tactile, little cup could be used to drink spirits like sake, but is large enough to use for wine too. It was hand thrown on the wheel and left to dry for a day or two. Once it was leatherhard the surface was carved using a custom-made tool. Then it was dipped in a white slip and left to dry thoroughly before the biscuit firing. Only after it had been fired to earthenware temperature was the final layer of glaze added; a transparent glaze which fuses with the slip layer, creating areas of translucency. Inside, a thin layer of traditional Japanese shino was applied , again allowing the clay body to show through.
The piece was fired to around 1300 degrees centigrade in a wood kiln, which always gives this transparent glaze a special, lustrous quality.
The cup measures approx 3 inches tall and approx. 2.75 inches diameter at its widest point. The artist's personal seal has been impressed inside the foot-ring.
Postage and packing for this item will be at a fixed cost of £3.00 for delivery within the UK.
