This characterful, globular vase was hand thrown on the wheel and when leatherhard, the foot was trimmed and carved into an octagonal shape. A thick glaze containing dolomite was applied and it's this mineral which gives the piece a lovely, satiny feel like marble. The runs on the outside were ceated by adding a mixture of the copper oxides and the base glaze.
Fired twice to around 1250 degrees centigrade, the second firing has made the glaze melt a little more, producing the wonderful, fat drips around the base. This glaze is designed to craze heavily, especially where it lies very thickly .. the gradual discolouration of the crackle which will occur naturally with age is, in my view, part of its charm.
The vase will hold water and could be used to display fresh flowers.
The piece measures approx. 3.25 inches in diameter and approx. 2.75 inches tall. Mark Smalley's personal symbol has been impressed to the base.
Postage and packing for this item will be at a fixed cost of £3.90 for delivery within the UK.
