Full description

An eye-catching Raku pendant handmade by me of white stoneware clay coated in cobalt blue and white glazes. It is strung on a cord of waxed cotton and finished with a pewter ring around the collar.

HOW IT'S MADE

Once cooled after the first firing to 1000 degrees C, I applied the glazes, refired the pendant to 1000 degrees. At that point I removed it from the kiln and placed it in a drum of sawdust which promptly ignited. With the drum closed, the fire extracted oxygen from both the glaze and the clay. The intense thermal shock caused the glaze to craze while smoke penetrated the clay body to enhance the crazing and turn the unglazed surface dark grey.

I love Raku firing, it's exciting and unpredictable and produces striking one-off pieces. The method was first practised in Japan.
