This piece was thrown on the wheel, and when leather hard was decorated with a combination of white and black iron slips. After the bisque firing to earthenware temperature, a thin layer of matt ash glaze was added .. this glaze contains a high proportion of raw wood ash which creates some of the darker tones in the final surface. It was fired to 1290 degrees centigrade in a kiln fired with both gas and wood. The shinier parts of the glaze are where the pot has been flashed by the flames and ash from the burning wood. The inside has been glazed with a satin smooth shino glaze which has turned a lovely, warm copper brown and this makes the vase waterproof and suitable for displaying fresh flowers.
The piece measures just over 3 inches tall and slightly under 3.5 inches wide. Carries Mark Smalley's personal symbol impressed to the underside.
Postage and packing for this item will be at a fixed cost of £3.00 within the UK.
