I love kimonos and am fascinated by the fact that a whole kimono is constructed from just one roll of fabric called a silk bolt or 'tanmono'. It is an exact length and width and nothing gets wasted. This in turn denotes the finished size of my cushions! The kimono is in serious decline in Japan and I am looking to save tiny parts of their amazing history.

This is a really striking and special cushion is handmade with deep red vintage kimono silk which has been hand-printed with a vintage cream crane and gorgeous cherry blossoms (the whites are not as white as they look here! More antique white). An ivory/magnolia vintage kimono silk is used for the reverse of the cushion.
The cloth has been taken from a rare and genuine unmarried lady's kimono dating from the 1960's. The kimono has been carefully unpicked and I have chosen particular details in the cloth and cropped the fabric accordingly to look good as a cushion. The fabric originates from the Niigata region in Japan which has been a main producer of kimono fabric for over one hundred years.
Only one cushion left!
I hope you can display and enjoy this cushion as if a beautiful work of art or sculpture. These cushions are complete one-offs! Much of the cloth I use is hand embroidered or hand-printed and I think this is a wonderful way of preserving such an ancient and revered craft.
NB! Due to the age of the fabric there are some age marks and a smudge of black ink from the hand printing process (shown in the 3rd picture), but I think this is all part of the amazing history of the cloth!
