Full description

This wonderful little vase was thrown on the wheel and coated with a dark clay slip when leather hard. After the bisque firing the inside was coated with a deep green Oribe glaze, whilst the outside was dipped in Nuka glaze. This is a high silica glaze, which in Japan, used to be made with the ash from burning rice husks (rice husk ash is mainly composed of silica). The pot has been fired to around 1280 degrees centigrade so is fully waterproof and could be used to display fresh flowers.

It's the underlying iron slip on this piece which creates the variegated surface, producing tiny blue-black streaks and smokey cream and coffee-coloured areas.

This vase sits beautifully in the palm of the hand..one of those tactile pieces which is very enjoyable to pick up and handle. Height is approx. 2 inches and width just over 2.5 inches. Carries Mark Smalley's personal symbol impressed to the base.

Postage and packing is at a fixed cost of £2.90.
