I love kimonos and am fascinated by the fact that a whole kimono is constructed from just one roll of fabric called a silk bolt or 'tanmono'. It is an exact length and width and nothing gets wasted. This in turn denotes the finished size of my cushions! The kimono is in serious decline in Japan and I am looking to save tiny parts of their amazing history.

This incredibly beautiful hand painted pink and white vintage kimono fabric cushion has been meticulously handmade by me. The delicate cherry blossom branch design has been hand screen printed and is lovely to see in its detail. The blossoms are over printed in a matt white standing out from the sheen of the pink silk and the blooms have a metallic silver centre. The reverse of the cushion is in the same kimono silk.
This completely unique cushion has been made from a piece of cloth taken from a rare and genuine japanese summer weight uchikake or wedding kimono by an unmarried woman dating from the 1970's. The kimono has been carefully unpicked and I have chosen particular details in the cloth and cropped the fabric accordingly to look good as a cushion. It is in great condition considering its age, but there is a small age spot on the reverse of the cushion.
Cherry blossom is hugely important in Japan and symbolises the transient nature of life, as the blossoms of spring are so fleeting yet so beautiful.
I hope you can display and enjoy this cushion as if a beautiful work of art or sculpture. Much of the cloth I use is hand embroidered or hand-printed and I think this is a wonderful way of preserving such an ancient and revered craft.
