A striking and decorative raku bowl thrown on the wheel.
HOW IT'S MADE
I fired this bowl twice to 1000 degrees C and applied the glaze between the two firings. Once the top temperature was reached the second time, I removed the bowl from the kiln and placed it into a drum of wood shavings which promptly ignited. With the drum closed, the fire extracted oxygen from both the glaze and the clay. The thermal shock caused the glaze to craze while smoke penetrated the clay and enhanced the crackles.
Half of the bowl is coated in a special glaze that shimmers in shades of blue to emerald green, whilst the other half has a cream finish. Both glazes have a soft sheen and are separated by a line of unglazed clay darkened by the smoke that engulfed the bowl in the reduction drum. The thermal shock produced a mix of dramatic and subtle lines.
