Full description

This beautiful, stoneware cup was hand-thrown on the wheel using a dark, grogged clay, and decorated with slip when leatherhard. Areas of the clay body have been deliberately left uncovered, to create a contrast with the poured, white slip. It was fired to about 1300 degrees C in a traditional wood kiln, and the flames have produced some lovely, subtle colouring on the outside of the piece. Inside, the cup has been glazed with a transparent ash glaze which is completely food-safe.

As the white slip has shrunk in the firing, subtle cracks have appeared in the surface, creating a pleasing, aged look. The small cracks at the base of the handle are only in the surface layer of slip and do not affect the integrity of the handle itself.

It is quite a light cup and easy to hold, measuring approx. 3.5 inches tall and just under five inches wide, including the handle. The mouth of the cup is 3.5 inches diameter. Mark Smalley's personal symbol has been impressed underneath the handle.

UK postage and packing for this item will be at a fixed cost of £3.00.
