I love kimonos and am fascinated by the fact that a whole kimono is constructed from just one roll of fabric called a silk bolt or 'tanmono'. It is an exact length and width and nothing gets wasted. This in turn denotes the finished size of my cushions! The kimono is in serious decline in Japan and I am looking to save tiny parts of their amazing history.
I hope you can display and enjoy this cushion as if a beautiful work of art or sculpture. Much of the cloth I use is hand embroidered or hand-painted and I think this is a wonderful way of preserving such an ancient and revered craft.

A stunningly beautiful cushion handmade from vintage kimono silk sateen, hand woven with cherry blossoms and roses. This woven design in ruby red, dusky pink and grey silver really looks lovely when the light catches it against the rich wine coloured background. The pictures do not do it justice!
An unusual kimono silk fabric woven with a tsunami wave design is on the reverse of the cushion.
This unique cushion has been made from a piece of cloth taken from a rare japanese kimono dating from at least the 1950's, possibly earlier. (No kimonos were injured during the making of this cushion. All fabric is taken from damaged kimono!) The kimono has been carefully unpicked and I have chosen particular details in the cloth and cropped the fabric accordingly to look good as a cushion.
This cushion would make a fabulous gift given as if a beautiful work of art or sculpture. Much of the cloth I use is hand embroidered or hand-dyed and I think this is a wonderful way of preserving such an ancient and revered craft.
