I love kimonos and am fascinated by the fact that a whole kimono is constructed from just one roll of fabric called a silk bolt or 'tanmono'. It is an exact length and width and nothing gets wasted. This in turn denotes the finished size of my cushions!

NB No kimonos were harmed in the making of this cushion. Ribbonreal only uses damaged kimonos for salvaging the beautiful cloth.

Full description

A striking cushion made with vintage kimono silk fabric printed with white, red, and golden yellow leaves and blossoms, and grey branches. The fabric has a clouded sky design incorporated into the weave. Vintage ivory kimono double gauze silk is on the reverse of this cushion.

The cloth has been taken from a rare and genuine japanese kimono worn by a young lady dating from the 1970's. The kimono has been carefully unpicked and I have chosen particular details in the cloth and cropped the fabric accordingly to look good as a cushion. The fabric originates from the Niigata region in Japan which has been a main producer of kimono silk for over one hundred years.

I hope you can display and enjoy this cushion as if a beautiful work of art or sculpture. Much of the cloth I use is hand embroidered or hand-printed and I think this is a wonderful way of preserving such an ancient and revered craft.
