I love kimonos and am fascinated by the fact that a whole kimono is constructed from just one roll of fabric called a silk bolt or 'tanmono'. It is an exact length and width and nothing gets wasted. This in turn denotes the finished size of my cushions! The kimono is in serious decline in Japan and I am looking to save tiny parts of their amazing history.
I hope you can display and enjoy this cushion as if a beautiful work of art or sculpture. Much of the cloth I use is hand embroidered or hand-painted and I think this is a wonderful way of preserving such an ancient and revered craft.

Full description

A pretty and delicate cushion handmade from very vintage kimono silk, hand printed and painted with plum blossom, chrysanthemums and maple leaves. Some of these motifs are highlighted with gold paint. An unusual double gauze vintage kimono silk fabric is on the reverse of the cushion.

This unique cushion has been made from a piece of cloth taken from a rare japanese kimono dating from the 1950's. Please note this cushion has a certain 'grubiness' to it due to it's age. This does not distract from its beauty and the silk is so pretty it would be a shame not to use it. Please study the pictures for details. The final large mark is actually gold paint from when the silk was originally made.

(No kimonos were injured during the making of this cushion. All fabric is taken from damaged kimono!) The kimono has been carefully unpicked and I have chosen particular details in the cloth and cropped the fabric accordingly to look good as a cushion. The fabric originates from the Kyoto region in Japan which has been a main producer of kimono silk for hundreds years.
