I love books and turning old ones that I have rescued into something beautiful is a lovely way to upcycle them and hopefully inspire others to read these wonderful books.
I have always loved The Secret Garden, the film was one of my favourites to watch when I was ill (and still is!)

"It was the lock of the door which had been closed ten years and she put her hand in her pocket, drew out the key and found it fitted the keyhole. She put the key in and turned it. It took two hands to do it, but it did turn."
The robin helping Mary to find the garden that has been locked away for so many years is a wonderful scene that evokes magical feelings in anyone who reads it. The idea of finding a secret place is exciting for children (and adults!) I'm sure many people have spent hours searching their own gardens for one. I designed this piece to conjure up these feelings to remind us of the joys of exploration and discovery.
Every part of this piece (excluding the frame) is handmade from recycled materials. I buy as many books as possible from charity shops, others come from secondhand book shops. The base is recycled cardboard covered with recycled coffee sacks (bought from brick lane market, they even had a few stray beans in so you know they're real!) and the raised layers are achieved by sticking together layers of recycled cardboard.
