I love kimonos and am fascinated by the fact that a whole kimono is constructed from just one roll of fabric called a silk bolt or 'tanmono'. It is an exact length and width and nothing gets wasted. This in turn denotes the finished size of my cushions! The kimono is in serious decline in Japan and I am looking to save tiny parts of their amazing history.

'Paper Fans & Cherry Blossom'
Incredibly delicate vintage ivory silk fabric printed with red cherry blossom branches and blue paper fans. It has a very slight sheen when the light catches it and a climbing plant patterm incorporated into the weave. Vintage ivory kimono fabric is on the reverse of this cushion. (Please note there are a couple of slight marks on this fabric, barely noticeable, shown in my last picture.)
This cushion has been made from a piece of cloth taken from a rare and genuine japanese summer weight kimono worn by a young lady dating from the 1950's. The kimono has been carefully unpicked and I have chosen particular details in the cloth and cropped the fabric accordingly to look good as a cushion. The fabric originates from the Niigata region in Japan which has been a main producer of kimono silk for over one hundred years.
I hope you can display and enjoy this cushion as if a beautiful work of art or sculpture. Much of the cloth I use is hand embroidered or hand -painted and I think this is a wonderful way of preserving such an ancient and revered craft.
