This necklace grew out of two long-standing threads in my life: a deep, lifelong fascination with Japanese culture, and my love of working with expressive, story-rich textiles. Over the years I have built an ever-growing collection of vintage Japanese kimono silk, drawn to the incredible variety of colours, patterns, and quiet narratives held within each piece of fabric. Every textile feels different and often a single fragment is enough to spark an idea.

One particular piece of orange vintage kimono silk, printed with small figures of women dressed in traditional kimonos, stayed with me. Around the same time, I began noticing worry doll necklaces appearing in local shops in Cambridge. Seeing them repeatedly planted a seed, and one day the concept for this necklace simply clicked.

Full description

Textile talismans formed into tubular pendants, each one cut and shaped by hand from vintage kimono silk depicting Japanese women in traditional kimonos on a vibrant orange background. The piece is completed with a combination of vintage-inspired fabric cord, metal chain, and Czech glass beads, all carefully chosen to echo the colours and mood of the silk. I specifically selected the fabric cord using principles similar to how an obi is chosen for a kimono — in this case, I created a hantai (contrast) by pairing the orange pendants with a green cord patterned with white blossoms, producing a dialogue of colour and theme.

I have not been able to source another fabric like this, and once the material is gone, it cannot be repeated.
