I’ve been a Thames mudlark for many years and feel deeply connected to the Thames foreshore as a quiet place of retreat from the bustle of the city and a place to be in the moment whilst searching for objects lost throughout London’s two millennia of history. As an artist working with textiles, embroidery, basketry and mixed media, it feels natural to incorporate found objects into my work. In doing so I give the found objects new life and interpretation and tell their story in a new way.

Full description
I found this clay pipe bowl mudlarking on the Thames. It emerged from the river as the tide receded, leaving the foreshore exposed to mudlarks to find items lost to time and the river. This work playfully reverses the viewpoint, with the river Thames emerging from the clay pipe.
Hand embroidered in cotton thread and incorporating a found 17th Century clay pipe bowl. Presented in an embroidery hoop backed with felt.
I hold a Creative Permit issued by the Port of London Authority which allows me to make use of certain finds without archaeological importance in my work.
