Full description
A hand carved duck made from basswood.
I carved this from a small block of wood, keeping the shape simple and focusing on the form rather than lots of detail. The lower half has been painted in layers of blue and green, inspired by water and shoreline colours, while the upper half has been left natural to show the grain of the wood.
Once carved and painted, it was finished with a clear wax to protect the surface and bring out the character of the basswood.
The rounded base means the duck gently rocks from side to side when nudged, giving it a bit of movement and personality.
At approximately 3.5cm x 3.5cm, it's a small piece that can sit on a shelf, desk, windowsill or wherever you think it belongs.
Every piece I make starts as a block of wood and is shaped by hand in my East Sussex workshop. No two are ever exactly the same.
