Inspired by the owls hooting in the garden at night

Full description

Tawny owl in flight original free motion embroidery on natural cotton fabric with mini random dots in a 6 inch wood effect flexi hoop with hanger. Detailed wildlife art, built up with layers of thread on a basic sewing machine. The background of this embroidery is enhanced with tiny glass seed beads, representing snow. The embroidery is stitched by eye and does not use a computerised process. The hoop is backed with 100% wool felt, embroidered with my name.

Inspired by the owls I hear at night. Unfortunately, I have never managed to see one and have to use reference photos.

Free motion embroidery is created by dropping the feed dogs (metal teeth) on my sewing machine and using a darning foot, to allow me to stitch in any direction. It is rather like oil painting; building up layers of colour, if I were to move the paper instead of the brush. It is often known as thread painting.
