I started working on this project in summer but somehow couldn't finish it, the original driftwood piece was too big and my wee drill wasn't really managing it so I just let it be. And then, months later, I found the perfect driftwood piece on one of the beaches here and was like "aaah, so this is what you (meaning the sea glass hearts) were waiting for". And then I could finally finish it:)

Full description

Three sea glass hearts nestled in a piece of driftwood. They were made by stained glass technique/Tiffany method or simply, soft-soldering -- I wrapped every piece in copper foil tape, secured it with silver-plated copper wire and melted lead-free solder all over it. I also used stainless steel wire. They were then patinated and treated with sewing machine oil; the driftwood piece got washed, sanitised and varnished. Both the sea glass hearts and the driftwood piece were found by me here on Islay, Scotland.

Size: the hearts: around 4 cm, the biggest one is around 6 cm (1.57, 2.36 inch)

the driftwood: 41 cm (16 inch)

How to clean the soldered hearts: with a polishing pad or washing-up liquid and warm water if really dirty or dusty, then a bit of (olive) oil will seal them just fine; the driftwood should be fine with just dusting.

Materials used:

sea glass pieces

stainless steel wire

copper foil tape

silver-plated copper wire

flux (evaporates and burns in the process, also gets washed off afterwards)

lead-free solder (tin and copper alloy with 3% of silver)

black patina for lead and solder (after the patina has done its job, the pendant is cleaned again by soda ash diluted with water)

Sewing machine oil

driftwood piece

Gloss varnish
