Lapis Lazuli is the most popular alternative to Sapphire for the September and Virgo birthstone
It is an ancient rock, an aggregate of the minerals lazurite, calcite and pyrite which has been prized by human civilisations for over 6000 years.
Cleopatra famously used ground Lapis for her eye make-up and Renaissance artists made a costly pigment from it called 'ultramarine'- think of the blue headband worn by Vermeer's 'girl with a pearl earring'.
Baroque Pearls are non-symmetrical with surface irregularities. The ones I have used are a creamy-white colour with a lovely rainbow iridescence when they catch the light.
Pearls are thought to be a calming gem, and have long been associated with integrity, purity, loyalty and faith.
Pearl is the birthstone for June, Gemini and the stone for the 30th wedding anniversary.

Full description
Deep, denim blue and creamy-white necklace with the glint of Austrian crystals.
The centrepiece features three Lapis Lazuli tubes, separated by trios of 4mm Austrian crystal bicones in the colours 'blue shade' and 'denim', highlighted with 1.8mm gold vermeil spacers and set between a row of five 6mm Lapis Lazuli beads.
The central Lapis tube bead measures 15x6mm, with shorter 10x6mm tube beads to either side
The necklace graduates to alternating rows of freshwater baroque rice pearls and 4mm Lapis Lazuli, separated with gold vermeil.
The Lapis Lazuli beads are a lovely deep blue with flecks of golden pyrite that add a subtle glint.
The top quality Austrian crystals add a gorgeous glitter of pale and darker blue.
The Freshwater baroque rice Pearls have typically irregular shapes and a beautiful iridescent sheen.
The piece is finished with a Tibetan rose toggle clasp with a gold finish, easy to fasten, and nickel and lead free.
