Lapis Lazuli is the most popular alternative to Sapphire for the September and Virgo birthstone
Lapis Lazuli is an ancient rock, an aggregate of the minerals lazurite, calcite and pyrite.
It has been prized by human civilisations for over 6000 years.
Cleopatra famously used ground Lapis for her eye make-up and Renaissance artists made a costly pigment from it called 'ultramarine'- think of the blue headband worn by Vermeer's 'girl with a pearl earring'.
Baroque Pearls are non-symmetrical with surface irregularities. The ones I have used are a creamy-white colour with a lovely rainbow iridescence when they catch the light.
Pearls are thought to be a calming gem, and have long been associated with integrity, purity, loyalty and faith.
Pearl is the birthstone for June, Gemini and the stone for the 30th wedding anniversary.

Full description
Each drop earring each features a 6x10mm Lapis Lazuli tube, topped with a pair of creamy-white freshwater baroque rice Pearls separated by a 4mm 'denim' Austrian crystal bicone, all highlighted with 1.8mm gold vermeil spacers.
The beads are threaded onto gold vermeil pins and hung from gold vermeil ear-wires.
Gold vermeil is sterling silver that has been plated with gold, and the wires are stamped '925'.
The Lapis Lazuli tubes are a lovely deep blue, with flecks of golden pyrite that add a subtle glint.
The irregular freshwater baroque rice pearls have a lovely, creamy-white iridescence.
The crystals add a hint of sparkle.
Handmade in my home workshop here in beautiful Devon in the UK, this would make a lovely birthday present, anniversary gift, or a treat for yourself.
These earrings measure approximately 1.25 inches (3cm), excluding the wires.
Your earrings will be wrapped in tissue and presented in a small organza gift bag.
