I first made a couple of these lanterns for myself to create a gently lit, calming space during the evenings. I found them to be an effective contribution to a relaxing environment and as an environmental graduate.
I also thought they were a good way to repurpose glass - a medium that is undervalued for it's uniquely versatile, resilient and reusable properties.
The design of the lantern came naturally as the most effective way to suspend a glass container. This was partially inspired by old naval glass floats on ships, and also by considering the similarities and origins of lanterns in various cultures.
My intention was to keep it simple and practical and by doing so, allowing the elegance of lanterns to speak for themselves.

Caution- Cut wire. Every care has been made to clip the wire to a blunt edge, and folded neatly, however please be aware that this wire was cut by hand and could potentially cause injury. Handle with care. Caution- Glass item. Risk of shattering. Risk of injury. Please handle with care.

Full description
Hand woven with raffia paper wire, and lid hand painted with an anthracite matt finish, this simple glass jar has been repurposed with the intention of adding warmth, ambience and character to any environment.
The jar has been fitted with a strong, galvanised wire handle allowing the option for it to be hung securely, or for it to stand freely on a flat surface.
Item includes: Battery-operated LED string lights, double-sided adhesive velcro strip to attach lights to lid or base.
Materials are sourced to be as ecologically friendly as possible. This includes re-using items, purchasing from suppliers with a low carbon footprint where possible, and limiting waste during the production of the crafts.
Jar type- Height: approx 9.5cm, Width: approx 8.0cm. Clear glass, hexagonal.
Paper wire type- approx 1mm. Dark Brown.
