Iolite is the gemstone name for the mineral Cordierite.
The name comes from the Greek 'ios' meaning violet, and the colour is similar to the more expensive stone Tanzanite.
It is sometimes referred to as 'water Sapphire', although it bears no mineral relationship to Sapphire.
It is often used as a more affordable substitute for Tanzanite and, like Tanzanite, comes under the birthstone list for December and Sagittarius.
It is believed to bring clarity by balancing emotional and rational thought, and to enhance intuition and communication.

Dainty, sparkly necklace of alternating beads of 4mm light Grey Agate and 3.5mm Iolite rondelles, with a centrepiece of a 10mm quality Austrian 'Tanzanite' crystal heart set between six sparkly crystal bicones of the same colour.
The crystal heart has a lovely sparkle, and hangs from a sterling silver bail.
The translucent, light violet coloured Iolite rondelles are roughly faceted and give a subtle glint in the light.
Tiny 1.8mm sterling silver round beads add shine.
The necklace fastens with a Tibetan silver clasp with a tulip design.
The clasp is nickel and lead free.
Handmade in my home workshop here in beautiful Devon in the Uk, this would make a beautiful gift for an anniversary or birthday, particularly a December birthday as Iolite is one of the December birthstones.
This necklace measures approximately 16.5 inches (42cm), excluding the pendant.
Your necklace will be wrapped in tissue and presented in a pretty organza gift bag.
