Full description
A Broche (also known as Brodse or Bretsche) is a centuries old tool for holding metallic thread, especially gold thread. By winding the thread onto the middle spool section, this allows you to work with the thread without touching it as much, reducing oxidation and tarnishing from skin contact. This design is based on a broche from the late 1300s, a very ancient design.
Handmade to order in my workshop in the West Pennine Moors of Lancashire, I specialise in rare and unusual tools for embroidery or other crafts. If you need a specific tool or a variation on this design, let me know and I can change the design as needed.
I can make these Broche from cherry, maple or walnut and your choice should be determined by the thread that you primarily use. Cherry has a red colour that darkens over time to a red-brown and is likely suitable for gold or silver threads. Maple is a much paler wood with a delicate grain pattern that would be most suited to gold and copper coloured threads and Walnut, with its dark, almost black colour, is best suited for silver and copper colours. On the photo, Cherry is on the left, Walnut in the middle and Maple on the right
All my Broche are approximately 180mm long and about 15 to 18mm in diameter at the handle and spool ends.
