Full description
The cover of this sketchbook is an original cyanotype print, featuring Hydrangea flowers from my English country garden. I love the way that hydrangea flowers look like butterflies in cyanotype prints.
Cyanotype printing is a wonderful form of alternative photography, where you use the sun’s UV rays to develop the print. I always use flowers as the subjects for my prints, and sometimes I add some extra ingredients … for this journal, I used salt in the wet cyanotype developing process, because this gives a wonderful crystalising effect.
The cover prints were created using Rhesho paper, which is handmade in Bhutan using the traditional Himalayan floating mould method in which the pulp is poured onto the paper frame. The paper is sun dried on the frame. Made from the inner bark or bast fibre of de-nar, a Bhutanese variety of lokta, which is a sustainable and renewable resource.
It really soaked up the cyanotype chemicals, and I think these are the deepest blues I've ever achieved.
It doesn't really come across in the photograph ... how I wish I had "feelyphotography" ... but this is an incredibly tactile print.
This book has 20 pages (40 sides) 150gsm Deckle Edge Handmade Paper, which has a gorgeous texture.
The sketchbook is A5 size – approximately 5.8 x 8.3 inches.
It's the perfect gift for the artist in your life.
