I love vintage fashion illustration and have often thought how well they would translate to embroidery with their clearly defined lines. So taking inspiration from a vintage underwear knitting pattern (yes really) I drew this onto a piece of pretty printed fabric and then coloured that in with watercolours. I really wanted a slightly smudgy look as if you were looking at something old perhaps through a lens. I was also keen to add colour without using very heavy embriodery so I knew watercolours would give me the flexibility of adding washes of different colours and tones without losing any fine detail with stitching.

Full description
Vintage themed original embroidery art showing a dark haired woman painted with watercolours onto white fabric printed with a white floral design and then hand embroidered. This is an original design that will always be unique because it cannot be exactly reproduced.
I collect vintage knitting patterns and was inspired to create this piece by knitting patterns for underwear (I know, but they were probably nice and toasty in pre-central heating days).
Firstly I drew the design on to the fabric and then painted it with watercolours to give this lovely blurred dreamy effect. When that had dried I embroidered over the painting with vintage embroidery threads inherited from my mother. The fabric itself is white and printed all over with a small white floral design which reminds me of pretty vintage wallpaper.
The watercolour painting on fabric is what makes this so unique, it would be impossible to reproduce this exactly.
The picture is framed in a vintage wooden frame with a glass front and has to be hung, there isn't a stand. I have used pretty candy striped twine to hang the picture but have left that quite long to give you the option to hang it at a length that suits your home.
