I wanted to give them a cleaner look and striking wood. With the instant suggestion for flamed spalted copper beech very welcome
I made the leg tenons smaller than the original so the wedge will have to wait for another day. A good project and lots of problems to solve.

Full description
Small stools/side tables based upon this old milking stool. Larger with turned (lathed) beech legs, all finished with beeswax for a natural satin look. The other with octagonal elm legs finished in modern oil.
These are about 400mm tall, 200-240mm across the top ish.
Ideal for bedside tables. I wouldn't recommend sitting on the smaller one, the larger one at your own peril.
