When looking at creating a portrait of Sylvia Plath, I decided to move away from her depression and eventual suicide, and try and find another aspect of her life and personality.
After doing a little bit of research I came across a journal describing her first meeting with her future husband and fellow poet, Ted Hughes. This was the woman I wanted to portray; the Sylvia of 1956.
The general look, fashion and hairstyle dictated by the period, I began to think of personality. With a slight arch of the eyebrow and a subtle turn of the lips there she was! The woman who would look you in the eye and challenge you, the poet and author that would question, the woman who would go on to write The Bell Jar.
