Pearls have been coveted by man for over 4000 years - the earliest written mention of natural pearls was recorded by a Chinese historian in 2206 BC.
In ancient Vedic texts, the pearl is born of Earth's waters and Heaven's powers, fertilised by a flash of lightening.
Pearls are thought to be a calming gem, and have long been associated with integrity, purity, loyalty and faith.
The pearl is the birthstone of June and the stone for the 30th wedding anniversary.
It's association with purity also make it popular in bridal jewellery.
Mother of Pearl is the name given to the lining or nacre of mollusc shells, a unique combination of minerals secreted by molluscs that have a width similar to light waves, which gives the nacre an iridescent, shimmering sheen.
It is the same material the mollusc uses to create Pearls.
Like Pearl, it is a birthstone for June and a popular choice for wedding jewellery.
A little miracle of nature.

Dainty stretch bracelet featuring a 9mm Mother-of-Pearl focal bead in the shape of a flower, set between Mother-of-Pearl 8mm barrel beads and a trio of 5mm Freshwater potato Pearls.
The circle is completed with 4mm Mother-of-Pearl rounds.
The flower is carved on both sides of the bead, has a delicate, creamy white colour and excellent lustre, matched by the oval and round beads.
The Freshwater Potato Pearls are delicate pastel shades of cream and palest pink, with a beautiful iridescence.
I have embellished with a few tiny gold vermeil beads, which enhance the sheen without detracting from the purity and simplicity of the piece.
Gold vermeil is sterling silver with a thick 18k gold plate - a much higher quality material, with greater durability, than standard gold-plated metal.
Pearl is the birthstone for June and Gemini, and the stone for the 30th wedding anniversary.
