Welcome to my birding world of life-like wool-sculpted birds, where no detail is too small or feather too tiny for me to notice and recreate in fibre.
Hand-made using needlefelt techniques and incorporating ethically sourced natural materials, my birds, from their feathers to the plants that they are posed on, are made from plant and sheared animal fibres and reflect my values of sustainable making: re-use, recycle and compost back to nature.
Orders received from now and throughout Christmas will all be posted on the 2nd January 2025, so I can switch off and spend quality time with friends and family.

I was making a life-size Kingfisher for my Dad's 80th birthday gift, and marvelling at the fact they are so much smaller as birds than we think of them. I suspect they loom larger because of just how impactful they are to see - that flash of blues and oranges with bright sparkling from the irridesence.
That led me to think about making tiny but still very detailed Kingfishers. I sat and made three tiny versions and then pondered how best to create a perch. A simple wire would not look inkeeping, as they are only ever seen in nature on branch or reed, so I developed a new way of making tiny branches and wrapped them in very fine wool thread used in weaving. A very fun session of painting and sealing the branch and the stream beneath each perch followed.
I really love all the colours on these little bird sculptures. Each is as unique as the birds and our experiences of them in real life would be.

Full description
One truly tiny but perfectly formed Kingfisher a quarter of its size in real life (1:4) handmade in wool fiber with mulberry silk details and teeny wire legs.
Mounted on its own unique tiny branch made from wool-wrapped wire, hand-painted and sealed, frozen in time as if diving with individual wing, tail and plumage feathers patterned just as in real life. The cork stopper is painted and sealed with shimmering resin to depict the water's surface.

Made using the needle-felting technique using barbed needles pushed into wool fibres, this bird has been very carefully handmade.
