I started my range of sew-it-yourself kits as I love designing new patterns and have less time for making. I also want to encourage others to learn to sew, so adapted some of my designs into easy projects for beginners.
I just loved this tulip motif - I first saw it used on a 1930's vintage patchwork quilt using more difficult needle turn applique on cotton fabrics.
I adapted it for raw edge machine applique for my Tiger Tulip Tea Party playmat quilt, but wanted to experiment further using other materials including felt - something I use a lot in my playmats.
Pure wool felt is beautifully soft and pliable - and not at all itchy like acryclic felt. It's easy to work with - both cutting out and stitching - and as it doesn't fray it makes beautiful strong yet intricate applique shapes without the fiddly turning under or heavy top stitching.
Blanket stitch works really well with felt, and is an easy applique or embroidery stitch for beginners to learn.
