Though it was coveted by Welsh leaders like Llywelyn ap Gruffudd and Owain Glyndŵr, Cilgerran remained firmly in English hands after William Marshal refortified the site in 1223. His grand stonework, replacing an earlier structure, serves as a lasting testament to the castle's enduring power.
