The colours shown in each picture may not be exactly as they appear in the artwork due to differences in the display modes of individual monitors and screens.

I'd not done many paintings or drawings of people and this seemed like a good one to try as it was mostly silhouette. The sunset colours made a nice change from the usual landscapes and there was also the interesting challenge of trying to depict the diaphanous material of the woman's wrap between her feet.

Full description

This pastel painting is a sunset view of a beach at low tide, with the silhouette of a woman in bikini and wrap standing barefoot on a large beachside boulder with her back to us, facing out to sea. The sky is fiery orange as the sun sits low in the sky. It was based on a photograph I'd found in a magazine, probably while passing time in a waiting room somewhere.

This painting measures 20 x 28 cm (or 30 x 38 cm including its coffee-coloured mount) in portrait format and was painted on Fabriano Ingres pastel paper using Faber Castell pastel pencils.

No prizes for guessing the inspiration for the painting's title!
