Hello! Thank you for visiting my shop. I have some new Christmas things (cards and gift tags) that will be available from the 4th of November!
I painted this scene back in December 2022. The weather was particularly cold as we were approaching the solstice and I was inspired to draw this beautiful stone circle, which I often visit with my dog.
Swinside stone circle, is also known as Sunkenkirk, as Cumbrian folklore holds that the Devil pulled down the stones of a church that was being built, and the result was this amazing stone circle!
A more believable story is that our ancestors built the circle during the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age period. There are currently 55 stones, but it is thought that there were originally 60 stones.
As this circle is somewhat off usual tourist routes of the Lake District it is usually very quiet. At the weekend you may see a couple of walkers, but otherwise you'll have it to yourself. The circle is in a farmers field, so you may find yourself sharing the circle with some lovely Herdwick sheep!
