This is part of a coffee table I made years ago which I'm now re-purposing so stand-by for other items in spalted beech arriving sometime in the future. A lovely wood to work with, giving a silky smooth finish.

Full description
Something a little bit different…
This pen holder is made from spalted Beech. Spalted Beech is caused by a fungus that grows on dead wood. It takes the fungus 2-3 years to develop in the wood to the extent shown here and fungal growth has to be stopped at the right time. Too soon and the patterns don’t develop, too late and the wood rots!
Each piece of spalted Beech is unique in the patterns it develops.
(Don’t worry the fungal growth is killed off and made inactive when the wood is kiln dried).
This pen holder is 14cm x 8cm x 1.2cm (5.5” x 3.25” x 0.5” approx.) and has grooves for 3 pens/pencils. It is compact in size and would suit a small, dark coloured desk to show off its patterns.
