I spent a lot of time wandering and painting in the Howgill Fells when I lived nearby and I came to know the valley of Crosdale very well. Tucked away behind the popular Winder Fell, it was seldom visited by walkers yet had beautiful views including this one across to the striking almost triangular peak of Arant Haw, seen on the right-hand side of my painting.

I would usually paint in the evening as the light was striking the fells in dramatic ways and I loved the way colourful shadows began to form on the slopes.

This little painting was the result of an expedition on one such evening.

Full description

Here is an original landscape in oils on stretched canvas, measuring 15cm x 20cm or 6 x 8 inches.

I created it on location in the Howgills, painting on a small piece of primed canvas wrapped around a board. After I had taken it home and it had had time to dry I then carefully stretched the canvas over wooden bars. The corners are neatly folded and it is stapled on the back so the staples aren't visible when hung.

You could display the painting as it is or in a simple wooden frame without any glass.

Designed by H Colledge in Crosdale, Howgill Fells
