Nestled on the south-facing slope of the bowl in which Buxton sits, the Devonshire Dome in Buxton is frequently hidden from view behind trees, stone built buildings and the undulating hills of the town.
But move closer, and the scale of the Dome becomes apparent - it rests upon only two storeys of its facade, and as you approach it, it looms away from you, its dome larger than St Paul's Cathedral, larger than both the Pantheon and St Peter's Basilica in Rome, the largest unsupported dome in the world when construction was completed in 1881.
Entering the dome this size is clear, the impression more intense as it seems so close to the ground. And moving into the centre of the dome is a beautiful and unintentional quirk of its design, as the very centre beneath the partially glazed cupola becomes an acoustic mirror, where your voice rebounds to you as if you are contained in a glass bottle. A truly mesmerising building.
