I love to create this kind of random patterning using this technique. A slab of white stoneware clay is painted with black slip and then layers of differing coloured slips are painted onto the slab. The pattern is then carved into the clay - known as scraffito - which uncovers the differing layers of colour. The clay slab is then rolled and stretched to further distort the pattern and create the finished look. Quite time consuming but its one of my favourite ways to decorate using colour. Very unique!
