After travelling in an ambulance with a very agitated dementia patient, who was desperately and constantly picking at her seatbelt for the entire journey, I started researching fidget mats in an attempt to make the next journey I did with a dementia patient and much more calming and pleasant experience for them. Fidget mats are known to provide a soothing distraction and all the ambulances for the company I volunteer with now contain them for patients who may benefit from them. Easily washable, they have been a great success and I wanted to make more.

Full description
A highland cow, or Scotland themed fidget mat, or twiddle toy, made for those living with dementia or Alzheimer's or similar neurological condition. Fidget mats are used across a variety of charities and organisations to provide a sensory distraction for busy, agitated hands, and a soothing or calming diversion, with a variety of different activities on the front, and a super soft dimpled fleece backing.
Activities include different textures, ribbons to pull at, buttons to feel, beads on ribbons to practice fine motor skills; a plastic and a wooden ring; leather tassel and French knitting to play with, wooden rings with beads behind netting for moving around, and a small plastic fiddle toy is concealed in a corner pocket.
The twiddle mat consists of twelve 100% cotton patchwork squares in Scottish themes with highland cattle, thistles, stags and deer and tartans. It is bordered in a green, deer patterned fabric.
This Fiddle mat would work for male or female and is the ideal Christmas present for anyone with busy or agitated hands in need of a calming distraction to fiddle with.
