I couldn't waste the almost two years that I had put in to this piece of wood. Even though it wasn't a bit piece, I wanted to make something from it to show off how beautiful I was sure the spalting had turned out to be.

Full description

It can be somewhere to put pencils, pins and other round things that could otherwise roll away. Perhaps you want a fancy spoon rest. This piece of sycamore comes from a tree that was cut down in a little village in West Lancashire. It was intentionally exposed to the conditions and fungus that causes spalting to form. Then left for the perfect amount of time to create distinct marks in the grain, without compromising the strength of the wood. Then, the long process of storing and drying it. I could then eventually, patiently carve and sand it over a few days to form this lovely little footed dish with a beautiful and unique spalting pattern. Scyamore, being such a pale wood, is wonderful when spalted. It's a stunning contrast with incredible natural patterns that can never be repeated.
