The Admiral Van Tromp ran aground at Saltwick Bay in 1976 and her remains provide the perfect focal point in an already dramatically bleak landscape. This was one of my favourite places in the Whitby area when I lived there because it was never the same view twice - sun and rain and changing light made each visit a new experience. Consequently, I drew this bay many times - this time choosing to have Saltwick Nab, the ridge of rocks separating Saltwick and Whitby, on the skyline with the Admiral piercing the clouds.
