Just before Lockdown, mam had been diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer, and it turned out to be the final year of her life. The numbers, made from my 1974 Sunderland General tonsillectomy toiletry bag, represent Mam’s chemo sessions, which she attended alone, because of the rules.
‘When you walk through a storm’ was because Liverpool FC won the league in 2020, playing to no crowd. It was for my husband and son, who are lifelong supporters, and who I hadn’t seen for a very long time at this point. And because I was in a storm, too. I stitched the rest of the lyrics to my second piece, because they wouldn’t all fit here. The red and white fabric was from my mam’s craft fair stash.
‘I can’t breathe’ is in reference to George Floyd, who was murdered by a police officer on 25th May. Reminded me that my problems were just a hill of beans compared to others’. Made using my son’s outgrown charity shop t-shirt that my parents kept for visits.

The original work, from which this print is taken, is a stitched diary of events from February 2020 onwards. I am not exaggerating when I say it kept me sane during a very difficult time.
The first of two ‘exile textiles’ made from things found around my parents’ house, where I unexpectedly found myself living for eighteen months during the pandemic. There are three in the series, however the majority of the final one was made when I finally got back home.
