An A4 journal that’s perfect for writers and artists, for journalers and scrapbookers, junk journalers and art journalers.

The original cyanotype print covers feature wildflowers from the hedgerows around my lovely Wiltshire home. There are poppies and ox-eye daisies, gathered while I was on my local walks. Cyanotype printing is such an Earth-friendly artform, which uses the sun to develop the prints!

I used some jade green dye when I was creating the prints, which works so well with the blues of the cyanotype chemicals, bringing swirls of turquoise to the mix. There are a few splashes of Winsor and Newton Gold Ink to give it a touch of bling! I used salt in the wet cyanotype developing process, because this gives a wonderful crystalising effect.

To create the cover prints, I used Fabriano Tiziano art paper in a lovely pale blue … it’s called “Acqua Marina” and it’s a lovely base for cyanotype printing.

The inside covers are handmade Nepalese Lokta paper, in a gorgeous deep teal colour called Ocean Blue, and it’s stitched together with Teal coloured Irish Linen waxed thread. The pages are recycled cartridge paper.

A4 is my absolute favourite size of journal. And poppies and daisies are some of my favourite flowers. So, I love this journal!!
Irish Linen thread is the best kind to use for bookbinding, because it doesn’t stretch. This means that the book stays firmly bound, no matter how often you open and close it ... I know this … I use my journal every single day!
I used Coptic stitching to bind the book together. Coptic binding means that the book will lie completely flat when opened, which makes it perfect for journaling or sketching.
Coptic binding was a method of bookbinding employed by early Christians in Egypt, the Copts, and used from as early as the 2nd century AD to the 11th century.
Coptic bindings are characterized by sections of paper sewn through their folds and attached to each other with chain stitch linkings across the spine of the book. The artist who taught me told me that traditionally, hand bound books would have seven signatures, and that's how many my books have!
