Thank you for shopping with us.

Joining forces with another artisan craft maker has a magical effect as you work out the possibilities of how different materials might act and look together. Working with Becs' beautiful hand-stitched leatherwork has pushed my skill level and opened up new creative possibilities for fine rush weaving. We have worked on this shape and size of basket on several occasions now - the variations are endless but we are enormously happy with the basic shape and size - it works so well.

Whilst the sizing and weaves are obviously set for this particular basket, baskets can be made to order - for any purpose, to your size requirements and your preferred design. If you have something in mind, please don’t hesitate to contact us with your ideas. Commissions are always welcome.

The price includes P&P - if you wish to purchase more than one item from our shop, please contact us prior to placing your order so we can recalculate the postage and packing costs.

You have 14 days, from receipt, to notify the seller if you wish to cancel your order or exchange an item.

Unless faulty, the following types of items are non-refundable: items that are personalised, bespoke or made-to-order to your specific requirements; items which deteriorate quickly (e.g. food), personal items sold with a hygiene seal (cosmetics, underwear) in instances where the seal is broken; digital items.

Please note that if your order is being posted outside mainland UK, you (or the recipient) may have to pay customs or VAT charges and a handling fee. The seller is not responsible for any charges or fees that may incur.

Full description

A beautiful shopping basket handwoven from Somerset rush, perfectly complimented by handstitched green English leather handles by Becs Ball from Bosorne Leatherwork.

32cms x 15cms; height to handles 26cms; handle length 47cms.

Woven from Common Club Rush which grows in low-lying areas of the country - eg Norfolk and the Somerset Levels - the latter being where I hand-harvest my own rushes alongside a team of fellow basketmakers from across the country. They are then dried in a barn in Devon and stored at my home in Cornwall, ready for weaving into beautiful items.

I love the annual tradition of gathering in the harvest - working with what the land gives and meeting up with friends and fellow basketmakers from across the country.

Rush is beautiful to weave with - soft and pliable in the hands and has its own delicious aroma. I love nothing better than driving back from Devon with my car packed with the sweet scent of dried rushes - excited by all the next weaving possibilities.

Rush weaving is a heritage craft basketry skill, utilising a local, sustainably naturally growing material, often similar in its uses to straw but with its own rich ancient history - eg rush-matting and chair-seating. Having virtually disappeared in this country, rush weaving is reviving, fitting in perfectly with green living practices as a renewable and sustainable product which will last for many years and has traditionally been handed down from generation to generation.
