Full description
The Vegvisir, the Viking compass.Hand-made ceramic artwork with an organic shape and rustic aesthetic. Every compass I make is different in terms of shape and colour. Different firing techniques and glazes are used to create a myriad of colours or simply two colours, some with crackle, gloss or matt glazes. I make three sizes small medium and large. The smallest size can be made into a pendant or used as wall decor.
The glazes I've used in the final product, and coloursappear differently depending on lighting conditions. This piece is at its best in good to strong natural or artificial light.
This ancient symbol is an Icelandic magical stave also known as the Viking Compass. The Vegvisir in Norse mythology is credited with magical effect. A Vegvsir in Icelandic means 'sign post'. "if this sign is carried, one will never lose one's way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known". Viking ships were thought to bear the Vegvisir to ensure a successful homecoming. The most common way of pronouncing Vegvisir is vague vee seer.
Optionally, the item can be mounted in a black deep box frame and can be either wall-mounted or surface-standing. Frame size: 18 x 18 cm.
