Welcome to Hazleton Art- Botanical Cyanotype Photograms, handmade in Hampshire.

Cyanotype is a camera-less photographic technique, that produces a distinct ‘Prussian Blue’ colour print (Photogram) The process was discovered in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, as a means for reproducing drawings and diagrams (Blueprints). Botanist Anna Atkins in the late 19th century was the first to document seaweed and plants using this technique.

Irene

The wonderful Botanist Anna Atkins was the first to use cyanotype techniques to capture and document plant life including Seaweed (Algae) She published her book British Algae in sections between 1843 and 1853. The books are full of beautiful Atkins' photograms and this led the way into a whole new method of scientific illustration and documentation of plant life. Anna’s work was impressive and still revered today, being only a twenty-something woman in an age where women were, mostly restricted from scientific disciplines.

In my Cyanotypes of Seaweed, I would never even try to imitate the beautiful work of Botanist Anna Atkins, I have taken a more surreal approach and tried to make them look as if they were still living and floating in the sea or rock pools, being swished about by the waves and dragged along by the receding tide.
