The wonderful Botanist Anna Atkins was the first to use cyanotype techniques to capture and document plant life including Seaweed (Algae) She published her book British Algae in sections between 1843 and 1853. The books are full of beautiful Atkins' photograms and this led the way to a whole new method of scientific illustration and documentation of plant life. Anna’s work was impressive and still revered today, being only a twenty-something woman in an age where women were, mostly restricted from sciences.
In my Cyanotypes of Seaweed, I would never even try to imitate the beautiful work of Botanist Anna Atkins, I have taken a more surreal approach and tried to make them look as if they were still living and floating in the sea or rock pools, being swished about by the waves and dragged along by the receding tide.

Full description
Part of a unique collection of Cyanotype photograms, using seaweed collected from the coast of Jersey in the Channel Islands.
By using the Wet Cyanotype technique on photo printing paper and canvas, the finished photograms have almost three-dimensional qualities and show the intricacies of the seaweed’s tender fronds and air bladders as if they are alive and freely floating.
For further information on the Cyanotype and Wet Cyanotype techniques see ‘About' in my shop.
