Item details

The Moon rabbit or Moon hare is a mythical figure in East Asian and American Indian folklore, based on the imagination that the dark markings on the near side of the Moon is a magical rabbit or hare.

The idea also has roots in an ancient Buddhist teaching of kindness and self-sacrifice and also as a Pagan symbol which originated in Medieval England. Whereas many cultures today refer to the "man on the moon", a few centuries ago the image of a hare was in fact more commonplace - hence the name "hare moon".

The hare is a symbol of regeneration, fertility, and magic!
