I don’t claim the concept of granny squares used for a tea cosy, there are several vintage and modern ones around (a good idea is often reinvented); but I did design this specific construction and wrote the pattern for myself, in plain language with photos. I am also always happy to help with the pattern if you get stuck.
I designed this version of a granny square tea cosy specifically to use up oddments of yarn I had and the frilly top reminded me of my grandmother’s stories of when she was young, working in the iconic London Lyon’s Tea shops as one of their highly trained waitresses nicknamed “Nippys”.They wore frilly headbands!
It was such fun to make that I just kept making them in all sorts of colours! I was asked for the pattern quite often-so I wrote it up for a friend and once she has “tested” it I decided to make it available if anyone else wanted to make some.. This means even beginners should be able to use it with ease.

Full description
The Nippy; a "Granny with a Frill" crochet tea cosy pattern.
A crochet pattern for a granny square tea cosy. Colourful and easy to make with a variation on the usual granny square style; a band of stripes gathers over to fit whatever the shape your teapot is. The picot trim and bobbles add extra appeal; seams are crocheted or Join as you go.
There is a pop over version and an option with an opening for a handle and/or a spout.
It is a perfect stash busting project for using up oddments in multi-coloured scraps or just half a dozen coordinating colours.
It is written in plain language and with photos; but I am always happy to help with the pattern if you get stuck.
The instructions are in UK terms. (I can "translate" into American terms; just let me know when you purchase.)
Measurements: As shown this cosy fits up to a large 3 pint/6 cup/ 50cm diameter teapots, if made with holes for a spout and handle; or a smaller teapot if used as a "pop over" style cosy. Finished flat measurement is approx. 22/3 cm wide and 20/23cm high (depending on how many top stripes are made).
Materials: Approximately 25 gr of each of 6 colours Aran weight yarn. Size 8 metric 4.5mm hook.
Double knitting can be used instead; in which case it will be smaller-or less dense-depending on the hook used. However, extra squares can be easily added to customise the finished size.
Selling made tea cosies is fine with me; I would be grateful for a mention as the pattern designer if sold online.
